What Is 2FACED1 To You?

It’s now about twenty years ago since the frustration over stereotypes brought people together, in the environment of Uppsala, a really old university town characterized by its multiplicity and brainy spirit. But if was not until 2009 the term 2FACED1 was coined, referring to how identity will change with context for the stereotypophobic one, focusing on the movement rather than fixed ideas on what identity should be. The 2FACED1.com-site was launched in 2009, it came from the need of, pretty much, showing that WE existed.

One way to communicate the 2FACED1-mindset and show what it was all about back then was through clothes and personal style. Playing with ideals and stereotypes when it came to your own style could in many ways “fuck things up” for those who tried to place you in a certain category by first sight. Over the years passing since then, “personal style” has been claimed by the fashion industry and is making big money. “Personal style” is now packaged and ready to be consumed by whoever [can afford it], regardless of whether that person has any intentions to break with norms or really be forward thinking. It has also become depoliticized with the umbrella term “hipster” that doesn’t distinguish progressiveness from superficial trends. The mindfuck element is not really what it used to be, clothes are in many ways no longer the effective and unexpected mean of communication that it was when the 2FACED1-portraits were published.

During the last three years 2FACED1 has been involved in many different creative fields, but what is the need for such a word, context and collective in 2015?

Monday the 15 th of Dec we organized a workshop with some of the people based in Stockholm from the 2FACED1 network, we started out with a quick sum up of people's perception of 2FACED1;

 

- Permanent identity crisis (in a positive sense) – identities that collide and cooperate constantly

- Somewhere you can just be

- Not having to choose your identity

- Fluent Identity

- To be everything, everything fits in

- Stereotypophobia (phobia for stereotypes)

- Bridging gaps

- Educating

- See how far you can go, keep challenging yourself

- Consciousness about own privileges

- Inconstant/evolving

- Multitask-thinking, not locking yourself onto one opinion or one perspective

- Personal stories

- Movement through rooms and contexts

- Betweenship

- The Truth ;)
