2FACED1.com shows one persons two different faces in photos;
Persona 1: WHAT YOU WANT TO BE CONSIDERED AS
Persona 2: WHAT YOU FEAR TO BE CONSIDERED AS
This leads to a discussion about stereotypes and inner fears of getting misunderstood by the surroundings. Thoughts that every thinking modern day person does reflect upon. We're asking every day people from an innercity context where old categories as ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality and class are reassessed, why they choose to look like they do. We’re diggin' deep, peeling off garments, codes and attributes. We’re searching for transnational identities - is the conclusion that we choose whoever we want to be today?!
A 2FACED1 STATE OF MIND
A 2FACED1 is highly aware of existing stereotypes related to your own ethnicity, color, nationality, gender, sexual orientation and class. You’re trying to avoid them but sometimes also play with them to make people think twice about who you are. Two faced doesn’t mean anything negative here, it explains the double folded view you have on identity if you’re not the existing norm. Self awareness is a gift, because it also helps you to understand other peoples situations better. To be a 2FACED1 is to have the feet in different worlds, be able to move between them but feel rather at home in that space in between. You've stepped out of your comfort zone and has become one of the new identities where ol' categories are mashed up and rootlessness and non-given identity just means major possibilities.
2FACED1 is a state of mind, 2FACED1.com is a display-window for this mindset and the network of 2FACED1 includes all of you progressive non-stereotypes with a double perspective on identity.

Singer, songwriter, producer and musician Lady T has left the building late yesterday, American time, for reasons we don't know yet. Hopfully she meets up with Mr RICK JAMES up there, while singing the classic slow jam PORTUGESE LOVE, one of my favorite ones ever!
Teena Marie was the first white act out on MOTOWN, Billboars tells her story over here. Don't miss out on the SOUL TRAIN clip of the FUGEES sampled "Oh la la", and the legendary "Fire & Desire" apparence with Rick James on BET Awards:
"And "Fire and Desire," a duet with Rick James that featured the former couple musing about their past love, was considered a musical masterpiece and a staple of the romance block on radio stations across the country."
I've said it before: if you're a woman and say you don't have any female rolemodels, you just haven't done your research, go home do your homework.
A women that deserved more mainstream focus was the former front head of punk reggea band the SLITS (one of the bands who's crucial to the RIOT GRRL movement), and later on solo artist, ARI UP who past away yesterday at the age of 48. Ari Up went from punk to jamaican dancehalls to what some people would call world music (hate this term), she's one of the people that made the "world music" craze happen during the 80s (before Paul Simon) and has had an influence on artists such as Nina Hagen and even our own Neneh Cherry among many others. The video for Lazy Slam was released postmortum after Ari Up's wishes.
This photo is from one of my old SLITZ Magazines anno 1992 ( back when Slitz was a music magazine). Dirty Flights on Nenehs feet - just the way we like them!
Swedens finest, with the same birthname as my mother. I will say it again: made us get up, get out there to catch that innercity life. Did a google-run-through and found some newer images from the 90ies period, that aren't totally killed as references yet. Enjoy!
Underrated song from the same period, Buddy X. It was said, the song was written about no other than Neneh's friend, Lenny Kravitz, and his separation from Lisa Bonet. The video is actually directed by one of my favorite directors (and photographers) Jean Baptiste Mondino, the man behind Justify My Love, Human Nature and Open Your Heart and I Got You Under My Skin,. Mr Mondino also did a lot with Jean Paul Gaultier at the time!
The artist behind Gothic Futurism was announced dead yesterday the 29th of June (B. 1960). Cause of death yet unkown. Rammelzee was a part of the 80s downtown NYC Scene / Bronx rap/b-boy/graf scene, together with Basquiat he made the classic “Beat Bop”, cover by Basquiat, also to be heard in the movie WILD STYLE. His art has been seen in galleries both in the US and Europa. Step in to his world of garbage gods and iconic panzerisms by clicking on the Gothic Futurism link above.
1989: From Like A Virgin to LIKE A PRAYER, the song that got Madge banned by the conservatives and the VATICAN, and had a afro-american Jesus and burning crosses in the video. In true Madonna manner she also made Like a Prayer-add-version for, yep you're right - PEPSI (watch here)! Yes, we talking Pop Culture in a commercial (But I'm thinking of the difference between: "having profit as the main aim" and "having fame as the main aim") field, but you understand how massive this is don't you?
STYLINGWISE: it's just what we think is HOT in this minute, you got the velvet, the jeans blue, the bustiers and the earthy henna tones.
In the book MADONNA-AS POSTMODERN MYTH (2002) author Georges-Claude Guilbert discuss how Madonna's alteregos and phases reflects today’s society, it's contradictions and attitudes toward sexuality and religion etc. From an postmodern angle, the shifting images that personify Madonna are the most interesting and enduring part of the Pop Cultural icon she is. Or as we say over here, Madonna is an original 2FACED1.
Looks like this week going to be a Madonna one. Didn't plan to but she came up on this superlong facebook discussion that was following the GRACE on GAGA post, and I guess I felt like paying dues before she's gone, I mean, we didn't expect it to happen to MJ so we never know... But still I think Madonna love life to f*in much, I wouldn't be suprised if she outlived many of us, in fact, science move towards cloning and neverending life and I'll bet Madonna would be one of the first on it!
In Interview Madonna was speaking about the start of her career and the early 80's in NYC, people like KENNY SCHARF and Basquiat, and I realized I never posted the amazing photos of them as a couple.
In 1996, Madonna wrote a short essay on Basquiat for The Guardian prior to a show of his work at London's Serpentine Gallery.
"He was one of the few people I was truly envious of" . "But he didn't know how good he was and he was plagued with insecurities. He used to say he was jealous of me because music is more accessible and it reached more people. He loathed the idea that art was appreciated by an elite group. When I heard that Jean-Michel had died, I was not surprised. He was too fragile for this world."
According to Guardian MALCOLM MCLAREN has lost the battle against cancer and did past away at an age of 64 this thursday the 8th of April 2010. The Independent have an interessting interview with this subculture fiend (Nov 09)always blending the high with the low as an original 2FACED1, most known as the omnipotent manager of SEX PISTOLS, but with multiply skills to his name.
"That relationship between art, music, fashion and politics comes as close to any as explaining why it was that the most famous bands with which he was associated – first the New York Dolls, then the Pistols – could generate such excitement in 1970s. And why it is so lacking today in a music world dominated by X Factor, though he sees Simon Cowell's extraordinarily lucrative creation as wearying rather than worrying, symptomatic of a culture that is "not in good shape" and overrun with the "pollution" of globalisation."

A few sentences in a blog like this can't describe the faboulous life of Malcolm, but we can start by dig into some of his music and video art (I think you know your DEEP IN VOUGE and BUFFALO GALS but we'll include em as well).
1 1 D A Y S T O G O -> 1 9 F E B (we just wish Paulo could get some proper schooling in intersectionality and feminism... But still love him for embody the "new" Swedish youth, the 2FACED1s, during the 80's)
